I use film photography as a kind of therapy. When I am shooting analogue I put a way my phone and try and be more present in the moment, with a mechanical film camera and a simple meter. To shoot without the benefits that digital mirrorless camera offers us is to practice a kind of photographic mindfulness. I feel I have to be far more present, and juggle far more in my head. Planning is important, improvisation is fine but it costs money with film. Far better to have firm ideas ready to go and a shooting list in place.
My creative partner for this shoot (I hate the title model) was Rin, an accomplished photographer herself and constantly creative. Sometimes I feel my job is not so much to direct in a controlling sense, but to create a stage that allows other creative people to perform. To add their talents to mine rather than to repress them in service of my own ego. We work to serve the photograph and those images are what guides us.
Good light, good people, and beautiful surroundings.
